Beehives & Texas Property Tax: What to Know about AG Valuation
Did you know?
In Texas, you may qualify for a special agricultural appraisal, commonly called an Ag valuation or Ag exemption, by keeping bees on your property. This can reduce your property taxes while supporting pollinators and local ecosystems.
At Best Bees, we make beekeeping easy. Our professional beekeepers handle everything—so you don’t have to become a beekeeper or learn the trade to receive this tax perk. We install and maintain hives on your property, harvest honey, and ensure your colonies thrive.
The result: you get the joy and impact of hosting bees, along with the potential to meet the requirements for this unique agricultural program.
What is a Texas Ag Valuation for Beekeeping?
The Texas Property Tax Code allows landowners to receive reduced property taxes if their land is used for qualified agricultural activities. This includes beekeeping for pollination or honey production.
Key Requirements for Ag Valuation
Property Size
Your land must be between 5 and 20 acres, excluding the area of your home or structures.
Agricultural Purpose
Beekeeping must serve a commercial or food production purpose—like producing honey or providing pollination.
Duration of Use
Most counties require that the land has been used for qualifying agricultural purposes for at least 5 of the past 7 years.
Hive Count
Many counties require 6 hives for the first 5 acres, with 1 additional hive per 2.5 acres beyond that. Exact hive intensity varies by zip code.
Hive Type and Placement
Hives must be on-site for at least 7 months out of the year. Some counties require specific equipment types (e.g., Langstroth hives with a brood box and medium super). Unlike hives used in large-scale commercial pollination, which are often trucked across the country for peak crop blooms, agricultural appraisal programs typically require hives to remain placed consistently on your property to demonstrate local agricultural use.
Documentation
Be prepared to maintain and submit hive logs, inspection records, and (in some cases) documentation from the Texas Apiary Inspection Service (TAIS).
Location-Specific Guidelines
Each county and zip code—especially in Houston, Dallas, and Austin—may have its own set of requirements. Always consult your local appraisal district.
